A Word to the Wise : Don't invite a break-in. Keep all valuables out of sight whenever you park your car!
Within one week, two of our policy holders have had their cars broken into and GPS systems stolen.
Besides the inconvenience it causes you, a break in and theft will cost you even if the damage to the car is covered by auto insurance. You may pay out of pocket for a portion of the cost of repairs if a deductible applies. Personal property is usually not covered by an auto policy.
Your homeowners policy generally provides coverage for personal items if they are stolen from your locked car, but only if their value is above your deductible. We do not necessarily recommend using your homeowners policy for small theft claims since it may affect your future homeowners insurance costs. However, if the value of the items stolen is high, you need to replace them and this would be financially difficult, claiming the theft would be a good use of your insurance policy.
We hope this never happens to you, but if it does, we are happy to advise you on how to make best use of your insurance program.
